Imaging
We use neuroimaging methods (1) to search for genes that influence brain anatomy and physiology and (2) to characterize the neuroanatomic and neurophysiological changes found in individuals with severe mental illnesses and their relatives. For the past few years, our neuroimaging research has focused exclusively on magnetic resonance methods to document structural and functional brain changes in individuals with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder and their relatives. More specifically, we use anatomic (T1-weighted & T2-weighted) imaging, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and functional MRI (EPI, T2*-weighted) to explore the genetic influences on neuroanatomy and neurophysiology and how these traits are aberrant in major mental illnesses.
